Bio

Anna Kai is an artist and designer based in the Pacific Northwest. Her art is inspired by a sense of connection to the natural world — when the lines between the details and whole picture disappear. Anna is constantly trying to find her way back to that elusive feeling of total connection to her surroundings. Her paintings speak to these moments and she hopes to inspire others to look closely, tune their path, and nurture their own connection.

Statement

Full immersion, that feeling of being completely connected to your instinct and the natural world. I’ve felt it floating through powder, flying down the dirt, walking a path and planting my garden… Whenever that feeling of immersion is found it tends to come when I’m so focused on the task at hand that everything seems to exist together. I can see every micro root in the soil and the whole hillside at the same time. It’s these moments that spark something deep and mostly unexplainable — this is what I paint, and why I paint. I hope these works can act as as a source of inspiration to trust your connection and serve as a subliminal reminder that we all flow with it, together.

CURRENT WORK

‘Exposure Therapy’ — The act of exposing yourself to, say, steep grades or large gaps. Through that exposure, you adapt, more able to take on those situations with less fear. In the past I’d experienced this concept frequently on snow and dirt. But over the past couple years, I’ve found more than enough exposure therapy throughout life in general -- A constant collision of light and dark, scraping away at an evolved flow alongside pivotal transitions. These works are created with a lot of water, over time -- in fits of inspiration, grief and sometimes peace. They come from an intuitive place. I’m finding more confidence in my intuition, delivering its message and trusting its guidance. These are milestones of this trust and acknowledgment.
